Affordable separation technologies are urgently required to reduce the environmental impacts of 100 billion barrels year-1 of oily wastewater produced by the global oil industry. Pavani Cherukupally uses inexpensive, reusable sponges to reclaim wastewater and recover residual crude oil at ultrafast speeds at practical pH, temperature, and salinity conditions. These sponges can protect the environment at a minimal cost hence could be viable solutions to combat wastewater challenges associated with fracking, marine, and Arctic oil spills.

About our Speaker:

Dr. Pavani Cherukupally is a Research Associate at the Imperial College London and Kings College London, UK. She has received her PhD and MEng from the University of Toronto, and BEng from Osmania University, all in Mechanical Engineering. She was also a Visiting Scholar at the Imperial College London and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Cherukupally’s research focuses on understanding interactions between solid-liquid-gas materials for novel material, process, and technology innovation. She has designed materials and characterization methods for reducing VOCs for General Motors, particles adhesion for BASF, and fouling of membranes for DuPont Inc. Also, she developed a new sponge-based adsorbent to reclaim oil field effluents and collect residual crude oil from wastewater. The sponge technology is being scaled up to reform the zero-discharge policy in the Canadian oil industry. Currently, she is developing antimicrobial sponges for wastewater treatment in the UK and Rwanda. Dr. Cherukupally’s works were published in Environmental Science & Technology, Nature Sustainability, and Science Advances. Her works were featured on the Science Magazine Podcast, New Scientist, Advanced Science News, etc. She has received numerous awards notably Research Excellence Award by the New York Academy of Sciences, Best Paper and Presenter Awards from the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Society of Plastics Engineers, and Green Chemistry Initiative.
